Types of Systems

In fire sprinkler systems, multiple sprinkler heads are connected to a complex system of pipes hidden behind the walls or ceilings of different rooms in the building. The pipes are made of steel or a fire-resistant thermoplastic material.

Fire sprinkler systems are categorized as follows:

• Wet Pipe System: A wet pipe system is comprised of pressurized steel pipes that are always full of water. When a sprinkler head is activated, the water is immediately released, providing an exceptionally fast reaction time. Wet pipe systems may be unsuitable in applications where the pipes might freeze.
• Dry Pipe System: Dry pipe systems use compressed air as a delivery medium. When the sprinkler head is engaged, the air is released and the pipe fills with highly pressurized water. Dry pipe systems are slower to react than wet systems, and the cost of a dry pipe installation is generally higher; however, they are not subject to freezing.
• Pre-Action System: A pre-action system is triggered by a smoke detector or other heat detecting device, and water is sent into the pipes. If the sprinkler heads are triggered, the water is released in a manner similar to a wet pipe system.
